Montserrat and Sitges

Today we head about an hour  ( 30 miles) outside of Barcelona to Montserrat. Montserrat is a Benedictine abbey located in the Montserrat mountains. Montserrat literally means serrated mountain.

We decided to take the cable car up to the abbey which is the quickest and very scenic way.  The Abbey sites at 4055 feet above the valley and the basilica houses a museum with paintings and sculptures from El Greco, Dali and Picasso to name a few. It is a spectacular site with amazing views and you stand in awe to think of how this was build so far up in the mountains beginning in the 9th century.

Having a large part of late afternoon and early evening ahead of us, we also decide to head to the coastal resort town of Sitges.  Mountain to sea all in one day by train.  Just great!

Tram heading up to Montserrat Abbey- You can see the abbey in the upper left directly above the cable car. It blends into the mountain well.
